Open Enrollment

November 2 – 13, 2026

Open Enrollment is your once-a-year opportunity to explore your benefits, learn about what’s changing, and choose the plans that best fit your needs for the year ahead. Any changes you make during Open Enrollment go into effect January 1, 2027.

Be sure to complete your elections by 8:59 PM PT on Friday, November 13.

The basics

What to do during Open Enrollment

Your current benefit elections will automatically roll over to 2027, except for Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), which require an election each year to participate.

Your enrollment options include:

  • Enrolling in or changing your medical, dental, or vision coverage
  • Adding or dropping dependents from your coverage
  • Enrolling or re-enrolling in a pre-tax Health Care or Dependent Care FSA
  • Enrolling or updating coverage for supplemental benefits

How to enroll

  1. Visit Workday or use the Workday app.
  2. Click on the Open Enrollment image on the Workday homepage or find the task in your Workday inbox.
  3. Make benefits choices and changes, then review and submit your enrollment.
  4. Save the PDF of your 2027 Benefits Statement for your records.

The Traditional PPO and Health Savings PPO are staying largely the same, with a few updates:

  • Traditional PPO: Out-of-pocket maximums for in-network care will increase to:
    • $3,150 for individual
    • $6,500 for family
  • Health Savings PPO: To comply with IRS minimums for high-deductible health plans, deductibles will increase to:
    • $1,750 for individual
    • $3,500 for family
  • Both plans: Copays for generic, preferred, and non-preferred prescriptions will increase modestly for both retail and mail order. Remember that you must first meet the medical deductible if you’re enrolled in the Health Savings PPO.

Beginning January 1, Colorado employees will be eligible for Kaiser HMO, in addition to the Traditional PPO and Health Savings PPO. The plan features:

  • No annual deductible
  • Low copays for primary and specialist visits
  • Coverage only through Kaiser providers and facilities

The plan is generally the same as Kaiser HMO in California. Here are some key elements of the plan. You can also find full details in the Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC) or call Kaiser pre-enrollment experts at 800-514-0985 (Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. PT).

Important

If you enroll in Kaiser, you can only use Kaiser providers and facilities. There is no out-of-network coverage, except in the case of an emergency.

For those considering growing their family, we have a few updates to Illumina’s fertility coverage:

  • For Aetna and Quartz members: Your Progyny benefit is increasing from 2+1 Smart Cycles to 3+1 Smart Cycles.
  • For Kaiser California and Colorado members: Starting January 1, fertility benefits for Kaiser members will be provided directly through Kaiser, rather than Progyny. For details about Kaiser fertility coverage, visit kp.org or call the number on the back of your ID card.

Note: If you’re currently receiving treatment through Progyny and are enrolled in Kaiser California, you may be able to finish with Progyny before the transition to Kaiser. Any treatment through Progyny must be authorized by December 31, 2026, and completed by March 1, 2027.

Support for every family moment

From growing your family to caring for loved ones, Illumina offers resources to help you navigate important family life moments, including:

  • Planning for a family
  • Welcoming a new child
  • Tackling parenthood challenges, from newborns to teenagers
  • Taking care of elder loved ones

To find out more, visit the Family support page.

Starting in 2027, Aetna members will have access to primary care through CVS Virtual Care, in addition to urgent care. If you're struggling to find a doctor who is accepting new patients or facing long wait times for an appointment, this might be a great alternative. Best of all, virtual care visits are covered without having to meet a deductible first.

You need your Aetna ID card handy when you make an appointment.

As the cost of health care continues to increase significantly, most employees will see higher medical plan contributions in 2027. Illumina continues to pay the majority of health care costs and remains committed to providing comprehensive, high-quality coverage for you and your family.

When comparing your options, consider both paycheck and out-of-pocket costs. Lower paycheck contributions, combined with Illumina's HSA contribution, can help offset the higher deductible under the Health Savings PPO. For many employees, the Health Savings PPO remains the most cost-effective choice.

You can view the paycheck contributions for all benefits on the 2027 Contributions and Costs page.

The IRS has increased the annual maximum for 2027. If you’re enrolled in the Health Savings PPO, consider increasing your contribution during Open Enrollment to maximize your pre-tax savings.

The contribution limit for the Health Care FSA is currently $3,400. You can roll over up to $660 from 2026 into 2027, provided you open an FSA for next year. Both the contribution and rollover maximums for 2027 are pending with the IRS.

The contribution limit for the Dependent Care FSA is $5,000. While the IRS increased the allowable limit to $7,500, Illumina has not adopted this change and continues to limit contributions to $5,000. We do this to ensure our plan passes required government testing.

Starting January 1, Sun Life will become the carrier for:

  • Life and AD&D insurance
  • Short-term and long-term disability insurance
  • Supplemental health benefits: Accident, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity insurance

Bringing these benefits together with Sun Life will simplify your experience and lower most premiums for Supplemental Life and supplemental health coverage.

Here’s what you need to know about this change:

Life and AD&D insurance

Your current coverage will automatically transfer to Sun Life. No action is required unless you want to change your Supplemental Life elections for 2027.

Also new for 2027: Any coverage amount for employee Supplemental Life will be guaranteed, which means you can purchase more coverage without submitting evidence of insurability (EOI). The Guaranteed Issue amount for spouse coverage is also increasing to $50,000.

To learn more about your options, visit the Life and AD&D insurance page.

Supplemental health benefits

Your current Accident, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity coverage will automatically transfer to Sun Life, and no action is required. You may notice lower premiums for 2027, making this a good opportunity to review your coverage options.

Critical Illness insurance will add a fourth option for coverage: $50,000, in addition to $30,000, $15,000, and $5,000.

To learn more about the insurance options available and how the coverage can help you with expenses, visit the Supplemental health benefits page.

Disability insurance

Because Illumina pays the full cost of short-term and long-term disability insurance, no action is required.

If you’re currently receiving disability benefits, you will continue with New York Life for the duration of your disability claim.

Open Enrollment reminders

  • If you want to have a Flexible Spending Account in 2027, you need to enroll. FSA elections don’t roll over to a new year. You must elect an FSA for 2027 if you anticipate or plan to have rollover funds from 2026.
  • If you're interested in the MetLife Legal Plan, be sure to enroll during Open Enrollment, as it cannot be added later. Supplemental health coverage and supplemental life and AD&D insurance may only be added outside of Open Enrollment if you experience a qualifying life event.
