Managing a health condition

If you or a dependent covered by an Illumina medical plan is coping with a serious health condition, it can be hard to know where to get help and support. Illumina offers tools and support to help you take charge of your physical and mental health, so you can focus on what matters most.

Health conditions come in a variety of forms — suddenly and unexpectedly like an accident or cancer, or longer-term and chronic challenges such as diabetes or asthma.

Manage

Start by understanding how your Illumina medical plan works. Log in to your medical plan portal or call the number on the back of your medical plan ID card to find information on in-network providers and hospitals and out-of-pocket costs. Be sure to:

  • Check your out-of-pocket maximum, so you can plan for and manage treatment costs. This is the most you’ll pay for covered services in a calendar year. Once you hit that limit, your plan pays 100% of the cost for in-network care.
  • Choose in-network providers when possible. In-network care is typically more affordable, and you’ll reach your deductible and out-of-pocket maximum faster by staying in-network.
  • Contact the plan via the app or phone number to get care navigation support.
  • Look for preventive or low-cost medication options and use PrudentRx if you take specialty medication.

Learn

Get insight into your health through genetic counseling and testing. If you’re diagnosed with a condition, including cancer, or you or a family member want to understand your risks, you can meet with a certified genetic counselor and find out which tests might be helpful. The cost of certain testing is covered by Illumina if eligible.

Access

Illumina offers specialized programs that can help you take care of your health:

  • If you're enrolled in an Aetna plan, you have access to free expert medical opinions from 2nd.MD and second opinions related to cancer from MSK Direct. If you are enrolled in Kaiser or Quartz, please log into your member portal to learn more about available programs.

Support

Serious health issues affect more than your body. They can take an emotional toll, too. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or just need someone to talk to, Lyra is here for you. Reach out anytime for free resources and up to 16 free therapy and coaching sessions per year.

The sessions are 100% confidential, and Illumina never knows that you are receiving services.

Recover

If you’re unable to work due to your illness or injury, you may be eligible for a leave of absence or disability benefits through Illumina:

  • Depending on your situation, you may be eligible for Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Compassion & Care Time Off, or a Personal Leave of Absence.
  • Short-Term Disability (STD) provides income replacement for up to 12 weeks.
  • If your STD benefits run out before you’re able to return to work, Long-Term Disability (LTD) will begin providing income replacement.

Claim

If you’re enrolled in voluntary benefits like Accident, Critical Illness or Hospital Indemnity insurance, you may be eligible to receive a benefit for a covered illness or event, which can provide extra financial support during your recovery. Check your plan details and submit a claim if you qualify.
