Getting married or divorced

Any relationship change brings big changes to your personal life. Because you have a lot on your plate, we want to help with some reminders about your Illumina benefits.

Change

Changing your relationship, such as marriage, divorce, or starting or ending a domestic partnership, is considered a Qualifying Life Event, which allows you to make relevant updates to your Illumina benefits.

If you get married, consider these changes:

  • Add your spouse/domestic partner to your medical, dental, or vision coverage
  • Add voluntary life insurance coverage for yourself and/or your spouse/domestic partner

Any changes must be made within 31 days of your marriage/domestic partnership start date.

If you get divorced or your domestic partnership ends, consider these changes:

  • Drop your spouse/domestic partner from your medical, dental, or vision coverage (You cannot cover a former spouse)
  • Drop voluntary life insurance coverage for your spouse/domestic partner (You cannot cover a former spouse)
  • Update your contributions to your Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) to reflect expected expenses
  • Any changes must be made within 31 days of the date your divorce is finalized/the date your domestic partnership ends.

Evaluate

If you’re enrolled in the Health Savings PPO and contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA), you can increase or change your annual contributions anytime to maximize your tax savings.

Contact HealthEquity if your spouse has a Health Care FSA. There are IRS eligibility requirements that are important to understand.

Claims for a domestic partner are not usually eligible for reimbursement from an HSA or Health Care FSA. Contact HealthEquity for details.

Update

You might need to update your personal information (e.g., your last name, mailing address, phone number, or emergency contact) in Workday.

You might also want to update your beneficiary information for these benefits:

Plan

Updating your will is important. You want to be sure your estate plan accurately reflects your current wishes.

If you’re enrolled in the Legal Plan, it could be free for you to update your will. If you’re not enrolled at the time of your relationship change, you can enroll during the next Open Enrollment period.
