Genetic testing and counseling

Whether you're planning a family, have a personal or family history of serious illness, or are interested in proactively learning about your health risks, you and your eligible dependents can talk with a certified genetic counselor at Genome Medical to learn how genetic testing may be useful. If eligible, you and your dependents also go through Genome Medical to order the Galleri test.

The basics

How it works

Schedule your visit to talk with a certified genetic counselor from Genome Medical to discuss your health and family history, and recommend genetic testing, if appropriate. You’ll review the results together and create a personalized action plan.

How it helps

Genetic counseling can help you understand your risk for certain conditions, guide important health decisions, and support planning for your future — including family planning, disease prevention, and early detection.

What you pay

There’s no cost to you or your eligible dependents for genetic counseling.

Illumina covers the cost of certain tests (see below). This includes the Galleri® test once per year at no cost, if clinical eligibility requirements are met.

For tests not covered by Illumina, Genome Medical will discuss options such as insurance biling or self-pay.

When to consider genetic counseling

Genetic insights can help you take proactive steps for your own health and support your family’s health, too. You don’t need to have a diagnosed condition to take advantage of this benefit. People may seek genetic counseling with a certified genetic counselor from Genome Medical for different reasons:

  • My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 36. Should I get genetic testing?
  • My family member died from a heart condition at a young age. Am I also at risk?
  • I want to proactively learn if I am at risk certain medical problems that I may be able to screen for or prevent. What can genetic testing tell me about my future health risks?
  • My partner and I are thinking of having kids. Should we consider genetic testing?
Interested in the Galleri® test?

The Galleri® multi-cancer early detection test detects a cancer signal across more than 50 types of cancer. If a cancer signal is found, the results can point to where in the body the cancer is coming from to help your healthcare provider guide your next steps.

Visit this article on ServiceNow to review the eligibility requirements and the process to order the test, if eligible.

Genetic testing

Your genetic counselor may recommend genetic testing. You and your immediate family members will be responsible for the cost of any genetic tests with the exception of:

  • TruGenome™ UDD Test — the test used for Rare and Undiagnosed Genetic Diseases (RUGD cases)
  • Foundation One Liquid CDx cancer test
  • Galleri® early detection cancer test

Genetic testing may be billed to your medical insurance if it meets plan requirements for medical necessity.
