Pre-tax commuter benefits

Whether you take public transportation to work or pay for parking near your office, Pre-Tax Commuter Benefits help you lower those costs by letting you set aside dollars before taxes are withheld to pay for eligible transit and parking expenses. This program is administered by Edenred.

The basics

How it works

Set aside pre-tax money from your paycheck to cover commuting costs through Edenred. You have a variety of payment options for qualifying expenses, so you can decide what works best for you.

Unused funds roll over to the next plan year. Manage your account through the Edenred mobile app.

What's covered

You can enroll anytime in either or both of the following:

  • Mass Transit Account for public transportation costs, including bus, ferry, subway, commuter train, or vanpool services
  • Parking Account for parking expenses near your workplace or transit location

What you contribute

You can contribute:

  • Transit Account: Up to $340 pre-tax
  • Parking Account: Up to $340 pre-tax

You can change your contribution amount anytime.

Your commuter benefit options

You have a variety of options to use your commuter benefits:

  • Commuter Check Prepaid MasterCard for those who park and ride or take public transportation — accepted at qualified agencies and parking facilities
  • Commuter Check Vouchers are redeemable for passes, tickets, or cards anywhere transit, parking, or vanpool vouchers are accepted
  • Transit Smart Cards are loaded with funds directly to the card system used by your preferred transportation agency for your daily commute
  • Parking Monthly Direct Pay — request Edenred to directly pay parking and vanpool providers on your behalf
  • Bay Area Commuter Subsidy of $125 per month for those who live in the Bay Area 

Swipe and go

Commuter Check Prepaid MasterCards are reloadable commuter benefit cards that are accepted at transit agencies or designated transit retail centers where only transit and vanpool passes, tickets, and fare cards are sold. When you use a prepaid card, no receipts are necessary — just swipe and go.

Choose how much you want to contribute — up to $340 per account for 2026. You can change your contributions any time or update via the Edenred app.

Your unused balance rolls over each month while you are an active employee of Illumina. If you leave Illumina, any unused funds are forfeited.
